Fireflies

I’d like to make myself believe that Planet Earth turns slowly…
My incessant singing of this one line from “Fireflies” by Owl City the other night caused my friends to get slightly annoyed and wonder if I was drunk (for the record, I was not). I, too, was a little annoyed that that song was stuck in my head. (I also couldn’t stop singing Alicia Keys’s part of “Empire State of Mind”, but I didn’t mind because I think that’s a good song.)
There seem to be two camps of people when it comes to this song: those who love it and those who think it’s the stupidest song ever. I’m somewhere in the middle, but probably leaning closer toward the “stupid song” side. I do think the song is a huge trite attempt at rhyming, but I suppose I can see how some of the lyrics are playful and make enough sense within the context of the song.
There’s only one line that I absolutely hate, and that’s the “I’m weird ’cause I hate goodbyes” part. I mean, I’ve never met anyone who likes goodbyes, so why does hating goodbyes make you weird? But I think the other lyrics are just meh, not great but not offensively ridiculous or anything.
Everyone else seems to hate “I’d like to make myself believe that Planet Earth turns slowly,” but I think this could mean that he just wants time to pass slower, that he wants there to be more hours in a day. God knows I’ve had that feeling before. Or maybe I’m just reading into it too much and extracting meaning that simply isn’t there?
Song worms can be a real pain! I hate getting a song so stuck in my head that I have to sign it. I’ve never heard that song, but stupid lyrics do annoy me a lot.
Oh, that song. It doesn’t seem offensively stupid. But I don’t really pay it any attention.
I really liked that song at first, to be honest…quite soon after, I decided I really couldn’t stand it. It has nothing to do with the lyrics, melody, meaning (though the rhyming gets to me, a little bit). It’s just one of those songs that I can’t listen to more than twenty times on the radio without getting annoyed.
I LOVE that song
My roommate and I play it all the time. I really like the chorus, because I think the whole line about planet earth turning slowly is to try and make time pass slower to make the moment last longer, like you said. I especially like the beginning of the song too, the musical bit before the singing
