Jerks with bikes

General | October 19, 2009

Let me preface this entry by saying that no, I do not own a bike on campus and have not owned a bike since elementary school, and yes, I am slightly jealous of bike owners, but only when I’m running late to class and I have to speed trek all the way across campus. I do enjoy walking, really.

I just don’t enjoy walking in front of inconsiderate bikers.

If you’re wondering who or what brought about this entry, it was the girl who zipped past me on her bike this morning and splashed my entire right pant leg and foot with mud. That same girl just about ran over me a few weeks ago — I was walking with a group of people when I felt something ram into me from behind. I suppose I can’t judge all bikers by one girl who apparently doesn’t know how to bike, but my friends and I have had so many close calls with bikers… especially ones who zoom past at a million miles per hour on a crowded sidewalk.

Back in my hometown, there were laws prohibiting bikers from biking on sidewalks, and I really think that would be the solution here. True, I also hated bikers when I drove, especially when they biked right in the middle of the road, but I for one would rather have to slow my car down for a biker than get run over by a bike. But maybe it’s too dangerous for bikers to bike in the road when you consider Chicago drivers.

Blah. I think I may have just woken up on the wrong side of the bed this morning after my roommate’s cell phone rang at an ungodly hour.

I thought that your college is in the area I’m from (I know that sounds like I’m a creepy stalker but I read it in a thread at Snark – I PROMISE I’m not a creep!) and as far as I know, you’re not allowed to bike on the sidewalk, at least in the downtown area of the suburb. You’re only supposed to bike on the road.

Really? Maybe university rules are different, then… or maybe bikers just don’t follow the rules, because everyone bikes on the sidewalk. :(

It’s probably a university rule then, because my brother bikes everywhere and he’s always said it’s illegal for him to bike on the sidewalk. :/
