What kind of blogger are you?

Internet, Thoughts | October 11, 2009

Are you the kind of person who’s willing to put everything in your life on the table to provide your readers entertainment, or are you a relatively private person who’d rather be a little boring than give out too much information?

I’ve always been the latter. In real life, I’m a relatively shy person, and I value my privacy — I can be talkative and friendly, but you won’t know much about me until I’ve warmed up to you, which can take a while. Online, there’s the added dimension of having my blog visible to anyone, not just an audience I can select and know about, so I’m even more guarded. I’m never going to be as opinionated or as frank as many bloggers out there, and I accept that, because the possible consequences of blogging too much information and having that carry over into my offline life are just too scary to risk, even more so now, I think. Thus, I’ll mostly blog about random thoughts and inane happenings, never the juicy details, but I’ll try to keep it interesting!

That’s only one of the reasons I haven’t been blogging lately. College is just awesome and funtastic and amazing and fantabulous and marvelous and a whole host of other generic, positive, made-up and non-made-up adjectives. I’ve met so many fascinating and intelligent people that I feel boring and stupid in comparison, and it seems pointless for a boring and stupid person to maintain a blog dedicated to herself. I’m sure you can imagine what I’ve been doing, anyway, as a typical college student who likes to have fun ;)

In my public blog, I don’t tend to get very personal. I understand the dangers of putting everything out there, and I’m more comfortable posting about less personal things on a blog that anyone can read. That’s also why I tend to be bad at blogging regularly. :P

    On LJ/DW, I think I get a little too personal sometimes…

I’d definitely rather be a little boring and vague than to be really interesting and give up some of my privacy. The first time I had a blog (on a now expired domain) I was way too personal and it had several bad consequences, so I’m very aware of what I post and cautious of risking my privacy now.

I don’t think there’s anything about me or my life that most people don’t already know about. The only things I try to hold back are emotional matters (y’all don’t need to know about my angst!), or anything that highlights exactly how fucking insane I am!

I do try to respect the privacy of others in my life, and will try to refrain from mentioning full names, posting photos, etc. But everything else is fair game!

With that said, yay, I’m glad you’re having fun at college!

I really don’t try to censor myself. I have emo entries, and I have entries with family drama. I like people to know me, and I want them to REALLY know me. :)

I’ve been lacking things to blog about, though, because… yeah, college. :P

I try to censure what I post on my website, but when it comes to venting, I use my Livejournal/Dreamwidth. There are times when I forget that I may include very personal information on my website. It’s always a pain to try to censure oneself, me thinks.

And like you, I’m having a great time with college. Enjoy your next four years!

Other than the sensible privacy-for-fear-of-stalkers, I don’t mind talking about anything really. The problem is I never really think of an edifying post to put it in – I don’t want to be boring either, and I don’t want to give out disgusting details of my life just for the sake of it.
